Episode 3 - Powerslave (1984)

Image
After having discussed the Phish album "Rift," we are back to Maiden. This time, we're taking a look at their fifth album "Powerslave," an album considered by many to be among their best. We go through all the tracks, discuss the singles, the album art, and the legendary tour promoting it. We also discuss the sound of pirate adventures, The LeBron Jameses of the sky, and reveal which album we'll be taking on next. Note: Our episodes are scheduled to debut at 12:00am every other Monday, but individual podcast platforms take different amounts of time to post new episodes. For most platforms this is less than 30 minutes, but there may be exceptions. If your platform doesn't yet have the new episode, you can always play the current episode via our built-in player on this site.

Iron Maiden tour stats

Image
Here are some quick stats on the past and ongoing tours of Iron Maiden, including start/end dates, album publication dates, and number of shows per tour:     p.s. Don't forget! Episode 3 of Beast in the Maze, a discussion of Iron Maiden's Powerslave , comes out tomorrow!

"Powerslave" quick facts

Image
As we revealed in our second episode, next week Beast in the Maze will be discussing the iconic album Powerslave . The album is considered by many fans to be among the best, if not the  best, of the golden age of Maiden and therefore one of their greatest albums of all time.      While we are happy to have people listen in any context, the discussion will make more sense having heard the album itself, and we strongly encourage our listeners to do so - especially when the album being considered is a classic of the genre. If you haven't taken a listen yet, here's a quick overview:      Powerslave came out in September of 1984 and involved an unprecedented world tour, with over 180 shows in less than a year. It has what many people consider to be the "classic" lineup of: Vocals - Bruce Dickinson Guitars - Adrian Smith and Dave Murray Bass - Steve Harris Drums - Nicko McBrain      This lineup began on the previous record and would continue for four consecutive albums

Guest appearance on "New Ears"

A good friend of ours also has a podcast called New Ears, which, like our own podcast, deals with taking a deep dive into albums. He doesn't constrain himself to one or two bands, however, and will have a diverse array of guests, some of whom select the albums themselves. This leads to an eclectic mix of genres and viewpoints, in an effort to get at the question of what makes an album an "album" as opposed to merely a collection of songs.           Matt (the Iron Maiden half of the show) dropped by to discuss the  post-hardcore  album Yank Crime by the San Diego band Drive Like Jehu , considered by some to be a classic of the genre. You can check out or discussion at the New Ears website , or on Apple Podcasts , Spotify , or wherever you get your podcasts.     And if post-hardcore music isn't your thing, stay tuned to their feed, because there will be everything from indie hip-hop to Taylor Swift.

Iron Maiden live remasters, and gearing up for "Powerslave"

Image
Hello everyone! I just got back from picking up a copy of the newly remastered deluxe edition of Iron Maiden's Live After Death , widely considered the best live metal album of all time. While the podcast has yet to discuss this album itself, it was recorded during the World Slavery Tour, in support of the album Powerslave  which we have coming up next Monday, June 29th.  If you've already listened to the album, or want to hear what Maiden would have sounded like in concert at around the time Powerslave came out, it's hard to beat Live After Death.  Also, if you're sitting at home and looking for something to watch, there's live footage of the whole thing on YouTube (in fact, Iron Maiden's own YouTube channel is excellent, and contains all the albums as well as documentaries and bonus material). While we will be discussing the tour on the podcast, our primary focus will be on the album itself, so I wanted to use this opportunity to drop some quick numbers from

Episode 2 - Rift (1993)

Image
Starting at midnight tonight, you'll be able to download or stream Episode 2 of Beast in the Maze , our first Phish discussion. Brian chose their fourth studio album, "Rift," a concept album from 1993. Many of the songs featured on the album are concert staples, and it's as good an entry point to their catalogue as any.  Though Phish is mostly known as a live band that plays extended jams, hearing them played in the studio provides context for understanding the live versions and their loyalty to/departure from the originals.  Join us as we discuss it track by track! If you have questions, comments, or suggestions, you can leave your comments below, email us, or find us on twitter at @beast_maze. Thanks for listening, and we hope you enjoy it ✌🤘

"Rift" is coming up next week

Now that Beast in the Maze  has tackled its first Iron Maiden album, we're turning our attention to Phish, and Brian has chosen their fourth studio album, 1993's "Rift." A concept album loosely based on a man dreaming about a rift in his relationship, this record contains many songs such as "Maze" which appear frequently in setlists and are large parts of overall Phish lore.     If you've never heard the album, or want a refresher, give it a listen and check back in with us Monday 6/15/20 as Matt gives his opinion on hearing his first Phish album all the way through, and we share our thoughts on each of the songs.
